Automotive Camera Fundamentals: From Pixels to Object Lists

Camera types, mounting, field of view, perception, bounding boxes, confidence, tracking, and radar-camera complementarity.
An automotive camera converts light into pixel data over a sequence of frames. Camera type, mounting position, lens, field of view, resolution, exposure, environmental conditions, and geometric calibration all influence what the perception pipeline can extract.
From image to structured information
Preprocessing prepares the image; feature extraction and learned models support classification, localization, lane interpretation, and object detection. A bounding box describes an image-region hypothesis—not the exact physical boundary of an object. Confidence scores support decision thresholds but are not guarantees.
Time and motion
Tracking connects detections across frames. Motion estimation must distinguish object motion from ego-motion caused by the camera vehicle itself.
Complementary sensing
Cameras can provide rich visual and lateral information, while radar contributes strong range and relative-velocity measurements. Fusion can combine these strengths, but only after timing, coordinates, calibration, and object association are handled correctly. [2]
