Functional Safety: Understanding the Role of ISO 26262

ISO 26262 addresses functional safety for safety-related electrical and electronic systems in road vehicles. It focuses on unreasonable risk arising from malfunctioning behavior and applies a safety lifecycle spanning concept, development, production, operation, service, and decommissioning. [1][2]
Risk-based development
Hazard analysis and risk assessment consider severity, exposure, and controllability to establish Automotive Safety Integrity Levels. Safety goals, technical and software/hardware requirements, verification, validation, and confirmation measures build traceability from hazard to evidence.
What the label does not prove
Knowing the standard’s vocabulary is not the same as claiming compliance or certification. A credible public explainer should distinguish awareness of ISO 26262 concepts from formal project evidence produced within an organization’s safety lifecycle.
